Constructing qudits from infinite-dimensional oscillators by coupling to qubits

Yuan Liu, Jasmine Sinanan-Singh, Matthew T. Kearney, Gabriel Mintzer, and Isaac L. Chuang

Phys. Rev. A 104, 032605 (2021) - Published 8 September, 2021

Quantum harmonic oscillators are promising resources for quantum computation and quantum error correction, owing to the infinite number of available states and their ubiquitous presence in nature in various realizations, but accessing and manipulating the entire state space requires an infinite amount of energy. In this paper, the authors provide a fully analytical construction to systematically close off any finite-dimensional subspace of an oscillator and further achieve universal control on it, by coupling to a qubit.

Multimode metrology via scattershot sampling

Joshua J. Guanzon, Austin P. Lund, and Timothy C. Ralph

Phys. Rev. A 104, 032607 (2021) - Published 13 September, 2021

The authors study the application of scattershot single-photon sources to multimode quantum metrology by investigating three different kinds of interferometers. They show that all three of them give the same average amount of information, but two of the three need to be in specific input configurations while the third one always beats the classical limit regardless of the input configuration.

Symmetry breaking in electron-impact dissociative ionization of linear symmetric molecules

Noboru Watanabe and Masahiko Takahashi

Phys. Rev. A 104, 032812 (2021) - Published 9 September, 2021

The authors report experimental measurements on electron-impact ionization of CO2 using the angle- and energy-resolved electron-ion-coincidence technique. The results provide experimental evidence of symmetry breaking in electron-impact dissociative ionization of symmetric molecules.

Measurement of the dynamic polarizability of Dy atoms near the 626-nm intercombination line

Marian Kreyer, Jeong Ho Han, Cornelis Ravensbergen, Vincent Corre, Elisa Soave, Emil Kirilov, and Rudolf Grimm

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033106 (2021) - Published 10 September, 2021

The authors introduce a scheme to measure the dynamical polarizability of trapped ultracold atoms on both sides of a resonance through modulation spectroscopy in an optical lattice. The authors then demonstrate the scheme by measuring the scalar and the tensorial part of the anisotropic polarizability of Dy atoms near the 626-nm intercombination line using K as a reference species.

Laser-assisted electron-atom radiative recombination in short laser pulses

Deeksha Kanti, J. Z. Kamiński, Liang-You Peng, and K. Krajewska

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033112 (2021) - Published 20 September, 2021

The authors develop a theoretical treatment of laser-assisted electron-atom radiative recombination in the presence of short laser pulses, which incorporates contributions from the laser-field-free process along with the laser-field-modified process. The theory is then illustrated with numerical examples involving either isolated pulses or pulse trains.

Overlapping Bose-Einstein condensates of Na23 and Cs133

Claire Warner, Aden Z. Lam, Niccolò Bigagli, Henry C. Liu, Ian Stevenson, and Sebastian Will

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033302 (2021) - Published 2 September, 2021

The authors demonstrate experimentally the creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates of 23Na atoms and 133Cs atoms. The mixture is shown to be miscible and to have a long lifetime of tens of seconds, which could potentially allow the creation of ground-state NaCs molecules in the future.

Spin-orbit splitting of Ar+, Kr+, and Kr2+ determined by strong-field ultrahigh-resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy

Toshiaki Ando, Alex Liu, Naoki Negishi, Atsushi Iwasaki, and Kaoru Yamanouchi

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033516 (2021) - Published 15 September, 2021

The authors determine the spin-orbit-splitting energies in the electronic ground states of Ar+, Kr+, and Kr2+ from the temporal evolution of wave packets generated by strong-field ionization of the neutral atoms and the singly charged ion, respectively. The results are in agreement with earlier measurements with significantly improved precision.

Diagrammatic approach to classical coherent two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy

Mike Reppert and Deborah Reppert

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033519 (2021) - Published 20 September, 2021

The authors develop a diagrammatic theory for the classical description of nonlinear response functions of anharmonic oscillators. Based on the theory, the authors demonstrate that the third-order response of a weakly anharmonic system can be qualitatively described using classical dynamics, clarifying the boundary of classical and purely quantum phenomena in relation to observations of molecular coherence.

Generalized adiabatic approximation to the quantum Rabi model

Zi-Min Li and Murray T. Batchelor

Phys. Rev. A 104, 033712 (2021) - Published 20 September, 2021

The authors propose an approximation to the quantum Rabi model, which improves upon the widely used adiabatic approximation. This generalized approach predicts the level crossings correctly and could potentially be applied to other Rabi-type light-matter interaction models.

Losses in interacting quantum gases: Ultraviolet divergence and its regularization

Isabelle Bouchoule, Léa Dubois, and Léo-Paul Barbier

Phys. Rev. A 104, L031304 (2021) - Published 15 September, 2021

The authors investigate the effect of losses on an interacting quantum gas and identify a divergence of the energy increase rate. The authors explain several mechanisms that could lead to a regularization of the divergence and point out that a standard Lindblad master equation leads to incorrect divergences in the time evolution of the energy of the gas.
