Emergent topology under slow nonadiabatic quantum dynamics

Junchen Ye and Fuxiang Li

Phys. Rev. A 102, 042209 (2020) - Published 9 October, 2020

The authors study the nonadiabatic dynamics of topologically nontrivial, noninteracting systems in arbitrary dimensions under slow, rather than the usual sudden, quenches. They find that, in this scenario, the long-time limit of the spin polarization can be used to characterize the topological invariants of the postquench Hamiltonian.

Continuous spontaneous localization reduction rate for rigid bodies

Luca Ferialdi and Angelo Bassi

Phys. Rev. A 102, 042213 (2020) - Published 14 October, 2020

The authors present a detailed assessment of continuous spontaneous localization (one of the best-known models for spontaneous wave-function collapse) collapse and diffusion rates for the center-of-mass motion of rigid extended objects of simple geometry, and discuss in particular corrections arising from the lattice structure of crystalline solids. Among other things, they find that the collapse rate depends on the difference of the mass distributions of the two states onto which the rate is evaluated, i.e., the states onto which the superposition state can collapse.

Experimentally detecting dynamical quantum phase transitions in a slowly quenched Ising-chain model

Zhe Chen, Jin-Ming Cui, Ming-Zhong Ai, Ran He, Yun-Feng Huang, Yong-Jian Han, Chuan-Feng Li, and Guang-Can Guo

Phys. Rev. A 102, 042222 (2020) - Published 22 October, 2020

An experiment provides an important step towards understanding the relation between dynamical quantum phase transitions and the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. These results provide insight into the topological aspects of nonequilibrium dynamics.

Coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy of single quantum systems

Matthew Otten, Tristan Kenneweg, Matthias Hensen, Stephen K. Gray, and Walter Pfeiffer

Phys. Rev. A 102, 043118 (2020) - Published 28 October, 2020

The authors propose a coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy, a variant of nonlinear spectroscopy for single quantum systems. Based on quantum dynamics simulations of two example systems, the technique is shown to provide valuable dynamical information on the investigated systems.

Angle-dependent strong-field ionization and fragmentation of carbon dioxide measured using rotational wave packets

Huynh Van Sa Lam, Suresh Yarlagadda, Anbu Venkatachalam, Tomthin Nganba Wangjam, Rajesh K. Kushawaha, Chuan Cheng, Peter Svihra, Andrei Nomerotski, Thomas Weinacht, Daniel Rolles, and Vinod Kumarappan

Phys. Rev. A 102, 043119 (2020) - Published 29 October, 2020

The angle-dependent single ionization of carbon dioxide by linearly and circularly polarized pulses is investigated experimentally. The authors show that delay-dependent ion-momentum measurements from rotational wave packets can be used to test the validity of the axial recoil approximation.

Nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics of determinantal many-body systems: Application to the Tonks-Girardeau and ideal Fermi gases

Y. Y. Atas, A. Safavi-Naini, and K. V. Kheruntsyan

Phys. Rev. A 102, 043312 (2020) - Published 9 October, 2020

Quantum thermodynamics of a thermal Tonks-Girardeau gas driven by a periodically varying potential is investigated through the determinant representation of the many-body wave function. The approach for calculating the characteristic function of the work distribution could also be applied to a wide range of driven systems.

Controlled creation of three-dimensional vortex structures in Bose-Einstein condensates using artificial magnetic fields

James Schloss, Peter Barnett, Rashi Sachdeva, and Thomas Busch

Phys. Rev. A 102, 043325 (2020) - Published 23 October, 2020

The authors study theoretically and numerically how Bose-Einstein condensates interact with the evanescent field profiles. Based on the results, the authors then propose a scheme to create, control, and detect vortex rings and other vortex structures in a Bose-Einstein condensate by using the artificial magnetic field generated with the optical nanofiber.

Dissipative-coupling-assisted laser cooling: Limitations and perspectives

Alexander K. Tagantsev

Phys. Rev. A 102, 043520 (2020) - Published 21 October, 2020

The author presents a comprehensive analysis of ground-state cooling of a mechanical oscillator in the unresolved sideband regime via a protocol that uses both dispersive and dissipative optomechanical coupling mechanisms. One of the resulting conclusions is that, in the sideband-resolved regime where the dispersive-coupling-assisted protocol is commonly viewed as an ultimate tool, the dissipative-coupling-assisted protocol may require a much smaller in-cavity photon number for the same cooling level.

Subradiance and superradiance-to-subradiance transition in dilute atomic clouds

Diptaranjan Das, B. Lemberger, and D. D. Yavuz

Phys. Rev. A 102, 043708 (2020) - Published 14 October, 2020

The authors experimentally demonstrate a transition from superradiance to subradiance in a dilute cloud of ultracold Rb atoms and in the regime of strong excitation. They also show that, in this regime, the subradiant time scales depend on the excitation fraction of the cloud, i.e., on the intensity of the excitation pulse.
