Quantum simulation of hyperbolic space with circuit quantum electrodynamics: From graphs to geometry

Igor Boettcher, Przemyslaw Bienias, Ron Belyansky, Alicia J. Kollár, and Alexey V. Gorshkov

Phys. Rev. A 102, 032208 (2020) - Published 9 September, 2020

A mapping between hyperbolic lattices and continuum quantum field theory on curved space is established. This result could set the stage for the quantum simulation of curved space in tabletop experiments.

Collective dipole-dipole interactions in planar nanocavities

Helge Dobbertin, Robert Löw, and Stefan Scheel

Phys. Rev. A 102, 031701(R) (2020) - Published 24 September, 2020

A generalized microscopic interaction model that takes into account the noncollisional atom-atom and atom-wall interaction is presented. The model reveals density-dependent line shifts and broadenings and tells us how to control such effects with the coatings used on nanocavities.

Glory oscillations in photoionization microscopy: Connection with electron dynamics and Stark spectral structures in the continuum

P. Kalaitzis, S. Danakas, K. Ferentinou, F. Lépine, C. Bordas, and S. Cohen

Phys. Rev. A 102, 033101 (2020) - Published 1 September, 2020

The authors investigate the oscillations of the glory scattering signal of photoionization microscopy images in the continuum in a joint experimental (Mg atom) and theoretical (H atom) study. The analysis of these oscillations provides the differences between the origin-to-detector times of flight corresponding to specific pairs of classical electron trajectories.

Double-degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of strontium and lithium

Zhu-Xiong Ye, Li-Yang Xie, Zhen Guo, Xiao-Bin Ma, Gao-Ren Wang, Li You, and Meng Khoon Tey

Phys. Rev. A 102, 033307 (2020) - Published 8 September, 2020

The authors report the production of a quantum degenerate mixture of alkali-metal 6Li and alkaline-earth-metal 84Sr atoms in a far-off-resonant optical dipole trap. The results could pave the way for studying lithium-strontium polar molecules.

Spin-optical solitons in liquid crystals

Gaetano Assanto and Noel F. Smyth

Phys. Rev. A 102, 033501 (2020) - Published 1 September, 2020

A theoretical and numerical investigation shows the formation of spin-orbit optical solitons in nematic liquid crystals as a consequence of a nonlinear modulation of the optic axis and the resulting geometric phase in the birefringent medium. The unusual self-trapping mechanism may allow for new all-optical waveguiding and switching schemes.

Quantum-optical realization of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type process via simultaneous action of white noise and feedback

Alexander Carmele, Scott Parkins, and Andreas Knorr

Phys. Rev. A 102, 033712 (2020) - Published 10 September, 2020

In this paper, the authors explore the effect of phase noise on coherent quantum feedback schemes for controlling radiative decay processes in quantum-optical systems. They show that white-noise-based energy fluctuations are not necessarily detrimental to the control success of such schemes, and can, in fact, be advantageous for a wide range of phase choices.

Quantum state engineering by nonlinear quantum interference

Liang Cui, Jie Su, Jiamin Li, Yuhong Liu, Xiaoying Li, and Z. Y. Ou

Phys. Rev. A 102, 033718 (2020) - Published 18 September, 2020

The success of many protocols in optical quantum information processing relies on the availability of photon states with a well-defined spatial and temporal mode, but the latter is often difficult to engineer. The authors present a new approach based on nonlinear interferometry that separates the nonlinear gain control from the dispersion engineering, resulting in photon pairs simultaneously possessing the advantages of high purity, high collection efficiency, high brightness, and flexibility in wavelength and bandwidth selection.
