Heteronuclear Rydberg molecules

J. D. Whalen, S. K. Kanungo, Y. Lu, S. Yoshida, J. Burgdörfer, F. B. Dunning, and T. C. Killian

Phys. Rev. A 101, 060701(R) (2020) - Published 24 June, 2020

In this work, the authors report on the observation of heteronuclear ultralong-range Rydberg molecules, together with a detailed theoretical analysis of the experimental data. Such heteronuclear Rydberg molecules are expected to present many new opportunities for studying quantum systems, such as probing interparticle and interspecies pair correlation functions in multicomponent many-body systems, exploring the sensitivity of the isotope shift to the mass polarization energy for Rydberg trimers or larger molecules, or studying new types of Rydberg impurities in quantum gases.

Noncontextuality inequalities from antidistinguishability

Matthew Leifer and Cristhiano Duarte

Phys. Rev. A 101, 062113 (2020) - Published 24 June, 2020

An approach based on antidistinguishability is introduced to derive noncontextuality inequalities and to give tighter bounds on noncontextuality for some states. Antidistinguishability was formerly used to derive overlap bounds for the reality of the wave function, therefore, the paper also gives conceptual insight by providing links between previously disconnected results.

Benchmarking one-shot distillation in general quantum resource theories

Bartosz Regula, Kaifeng Bu, Ryuji Takagi, and Zi-Wen Liu

Phys. Rev. A 101, 062315 (2020) - Published 8 June, 2020

Developing a unified formalism to describe distillation in a general resource-theoretic setting is challenging. Here, a comprehensive set of tools applicable to broad classes of resource theories is developed, revealing the similarities among many of them and establishing universal limitations on the distillation of such resources in practical settings.

Vulnerability of quantum classification to adversarial perturbations

Nana Liu and Peter Wittek

Phys. Rev. A 101, 062331 (2020) - Published 22 June, 2020

It is expected that the quantum advantage of certain classification problems, like quantum-enhanced machine learning algorithms, will become more pronounced as the Hilbert-space dimension grows, but care must be taken with perturbations on the system, as they lead to security breaches that can be explored by untrusted parties. Here it is shown that the amount of perturbation needed for an adversary to induce a misclassification scales inversely with the dimensionality of the space, but security can be restored if we restrict the class of states to be classified.

Speed, retention loss, and motional heating of atoms in an optical conveyor belt

G. T. Hickman and M. Saffman

Phys. Rev. A 101, 063411 (2020) - Published 22 June, 2020

The motion of ultracold atoms in a moving optical lattice is investigated in a joint experimental-theoretical study. Parameter combinations that optimize heating and retention performance are found from a theoretical model and are verified by experiment.

O. Bostedt, Alvaro Sanchez-Gonzalez, Stepan Dobrodey, Michael A. Blessenohl, Alexander Nelde, Maria Müller, Daniela Rupp, Thomas Möller, José R. Crespo López-Urrutia, and Nina Rohringer

Phys. Rev. A 101, 063412 (2020) - Published 22 June, 2020

Extreme-ultraviolet emission at 65-nm wavelength from xenon nanoclusters irradiated by an intense pulse of soft x rays from a free-electron laser is investigated in a joint experimental-theoretical study. Clear indications of a long-lived population inversion, and subsequent amplified spontaneous emission, are identified.

Coherent electronic-vibrational dynamics in deuterium bromide probed via attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy

Yuki Kobayashi, Kristina F. Chang, Sonia Marggi Poullain, Valeriu Scutelnic, Tao Zeng, Daniel M. Neumark, and Stephen R. Leone

Phys. Rev. A 101, 063414 (2020) - Published 22 June, 2020

Simultaneous probing of electronic and vibrational dynamics in deuterium bromide is observed using attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy after strong-field ionization. The results highlight how nuclear motions affect the manifestation of electronic quantum beats in small molecules, setting fundamental parameters for future charge-migration studies.

Rabi oscillations and Ramsey-type pulses in ultracold bosons: Role of interactions

Q. Guan, T. M. Bersano, S. Mossman, P. Engels, and D. Blume

Phys. Rev. A 101, 063620 (2020) - Published 15 June, 2020

Two realizations of a two-state model in a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate are explored through Raman coupling of hyperfine states and lattice coupling in momentum space in a joint experimental and theoretical study. The difference in the two realizations is highlighted by a particularly important role of interactions in the lattice coupling case.

Quantum optomechanics of a two-dimensional atomic array

Ephraim Shahmoon, Mikhail D. Lukin, and Susanne F. Yelin

Phys. Rev. A 101, 063833 (2020) - Published 26 June, 2020

Two mutually exclusive characteristics of traditional optomechanical systems based on bulk mirrors or membranes are combined: The ability to strongly scatter light and the one to attain very large mechanical susceptibility. The proposed platform, a two-dimensional atomic array, exhibits rich multimode phenomena and the reported results suggest that the regime of few-photon quantum optomechanics is closer to reach.

Backaction-free measurement of quantum correlations via quantum time-domain interferometry

Salvatore Castrignano and Jörg Evers

Phys. Rev. A 101, 063842 (2020) - Published 29 June, 2020

An experimental technique, traditionally used to probe space-time correlations in the classical domain, is made more broadly applicable in the quantum regime. The authors extend their previous work based on single photons to the limit of weak coherent states, therefore providing a method better suited to describe actual experimental realizations.
