Dietrich received his Diploma and Ph.D. degrees from the Technical University Munich (Germany). After postdoctoral work at the University of Maryland, College Park, he joined the University of Oregon, where he is a Professor of Physics. He also is a member of the Institute of Fundamental Science and the Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon.

Dietrich is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He served as Associate Editor for Condensed Matter Theory for Reviews of Modern Physics from 2005 to 2020.
