
Thomas Powers is a theoretical physicist working in soft matter physics and fluid mechanics. His current interests include colloids, liquid crystals, membranes, and active matter, as well as the hydrodynamics of swimming microorganisms.
Thomas majored in physics and mathematics as an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received his PhD in physics from the University of Pennsylvania. After postdoctoral positions at Princeton University, the University of Arizona, and Harvard University, Thomas joined the faculty of Brown University, where he is currently Professor of Engineering and Professor of Physics.
Thomas is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He served as Associate Editor for Biological Physics for Reviews of Modern Physics from 2009 to 2014.
