Mark Stiles is a theoretical condensed matter physicist who has worked on a wide range of problems especially magnetism, spintronics, and neuromorphic computing. He made particular contributions to understanding interlayer exchange coupling, exchange bias, spin-transfer torques, and spin-orbit torques.
Mark received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his PhD from Cornell University. He has been a staff member at the National Institute of Standards and Technology since 1988 and a NIST Fellow since 2009. Mark is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was awarded the Silver Medal from the Department of Commerce.
Mark has helped organize numerous conferences and served the American Physical Society on the Executive Committee of the Division of Condensed Matter Physics and as Chair of the Topical Group on Magnetism. He has served the Physical Review as a Divisional Associate Editor for Physical Review Letters and on the Editorial Board of Physical Review Applied.
