About PRX Intelligence

PRX Intelligence is a highly selective, fully open access journal for impactful research in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) that advances the physical sciences and related fields. It is intentionally multidisciplinary and highly visible, publishing both foundational AI/ML work and domain-driven applications spanning physics as well as computer science and mathematics, materials science and engineering, chemistry and biology, earth and environmental sciences.

Today, meaningful progress in AI/ML for science depends on collaboration across traditional boundaries—among method developers, domain scientists, software and data engineers, and policy stakeholders worldwide. To catalyze that collaboration, the American Physical Society (APS) launched PRX Intelligence at the forefront of the Society’s commitment to accelerating scientific discovery with trustworthy, rigorous, and open research.

PRX Intelligence is a highly selective, fully open access journal that:

  • Provides a high-impact forum for the interdisciplinary AI/ML community advancing methods and applications in the physical sciences.
  • Seamlessly connects communities—AI/ML researchers and practitioners, physical scientists, and engineers—to the broader physics ecosystem and to each other.
  • Maximizes dissemination of significant and timely results to accelerate breakthroughs for the benefit of science and society.

Building on the legacy of Physical Review X (PRX)—the world’s leading open-access journal in multidisciplinary physics—PRX Intelligence combines rigorous yet fair editorial standards with a scope tailored to the AI/ML-for-science community. We make timely, transparent decisions on which papers proceed to review, and we improve those selected through a personalized, responsive process that engages authors, editors, and referees in reasoned dialogue to produce the strongest version of the work and support outstanding, lasting impact.

By Scientists, For Scientists

Like all journals in the Physical Review family, PRX Intelligence is shaped by researchers to serve the research community. Its mission, standards, and policies prioritize the needs of authors, reviewers, and readers, aligned with APS’s role as a founding member of the Purpose-Led Publishing coalition.

PRX Intelligence Scope

PRX Intelligence welcomes manuscripts on AI/ML methods as well as their use across the physical sciences and related fields. Coverage spans theory, computation, and experiment in conventional physics disciplines and related domains—including computer science and mathematics, materials science and engineering, chemistry and biology, earth and environmental sciences—whenever AI/ML advances a physics based scientific understanding or capability.

For a detailed description of the journal's scope, see the full scope statement including subject areas.

PRX Intelligence Acceptance Criteria

Submitted manuscripts should address relevant questions, report sufficient or state-of-the-art validation, and demonstrate exceptional achievement in at least one of the following dimensions:

  • Exceptional advance: Introducing AI/ML concepts, results, or systems that open new and consequential directions for scientific discovery or understanding.
  • Exceptional connection: Bridging AI/ML with disparate areas of science or engineering, or unifying previously separate approaches to enable new capabilities.
  • Exceptional capabilities: Delivering tools, techniques, datasets, software, or platforms that unlock progress on major challenges (e.g., scale, interpretability, reliability, efficiency).
  • Exceptional insight: Providing clear, generalizable understanding of AI/ML behavior or scientific phenomena with high relevance across multiple communities.

Open Access

This journal is fully open access with all articles freely available for readers anywhere in the world.

  • PRX Intelligence currently offers a full waiver for submissions and transfers received on or before 31 December 2026, after which authors will pay an article publication charge (APC) (current APS APCs) to make accepted manuscripts available under a CC-BY (4.0 International) license. In keeping with APS's community orientation, this is the most permissive license available and permits anyone to copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work with proper attribution. Authors retain copyright to their articles under this license.
  • The APC for PRX Intelligence will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it offers a reasonable and cost-effective publishing option for authors in line with APS’s status as a not-for-profit society publisher.
  • APS authors are free to post the final version of their articles on their laboratory, institutional or departmental web sites.
  • APS is a founding member of CHORUS, which enables distributed public access to published research articles reporting on U.S. federal government-funded research.
  • APS offers authors from lower income countries the opportunity to publish Open Access at no cost by automatically offering APC waivers for articles accepted into all Hybrid and Gold Open Access titles.

Editorial Board

The PRX Intelligence Editorial Board comprises active, distinguished researchers selected by the editors and appointed by the Executive Editor. Board members serve three-year terms, may advise at any stage of peer review, and act as adjudicators in formal appeals. The board serves as a community-rooted sounding body for the journal’s evolution and policies.

Editorial Team

PRX Intelligence is managed by a group of outstanding scientists with research experience at leading universities and laboratories worldwide. All editorial decisions are guided by the acceptance criteria above and the journal’s emphasis on high significance, rigor, and lasting impact.

Quality, Visibility, and Broad Dissemination

Articles in PRX Intelligence are selected for their quality and potential for field-shaping influence. Authors benefit from the journal’s global reach and open access model. The editors highlight outstanding work through:

  • Featured in Physics – Regular recommendations to Physics (APS’s daily news and commentary site) for Synopses, Focus stories, or Viewpoints.
  • Publicity – APS promotes press-worthy papers to journalists (e.g., via Tip Sheets), often resulting in coverage across industry and popular media.
  • Issue Covers (Quarterly). PRX Intelligence will feature quarterly cover images that spotlight outstanding papers selected by the editors for their impact and relevance, further amplifying visibility across the community.
  • Indexing & Discoverability. Articles receive DOIs and are discoverable immediately via Crossref and major scholarly search engines (e.g., Google Scholar). The journal is pursuing inclusion in leading indexing services (e.g., Web of Science, Scopus, Inspec, DOAJ); details will be updated as approvals are confirmed.
