The goal of this Focused Collection is to highlight the state of the field of physics education research as it relates to upper-division undergraduate physics courses. The emphasis is not intended to be on curriculum projects, but rather on original research. However, many relevant projects are joint curriculum development and research projects in which the development of course materials and the evaluation of their effectiveness are key parts of the research. Practitioners who are interested in integrating PER-influenced materials into their upper-division courses will find a summary of current research in this area as well as contributions from many key curriculum projects.
