The top image shows the magnetic field lines of a freely moving spheromak (a nonlinear whistler wave packet) launched from a coil antenna in a magnetized laboratory plasma. As it moves, the spheromak heats electrons in the plasma, giving rise to a non-Maxwellian velocity distribution which creates an instability; this instability in turn drives linear whistler waves, which are radiated away along the ambient magnetic field (bottom image).
