Scanning Tunneling Microscopy image of a boron nitride nanotube showing the symmetry of the underlying hexagonal BN lattice. The overwhelming majority of BN nanotubes break the lattice symmetry and exhibit striped patterns. These anomalous patterns are found to be a result of the dependence of electron transport on effective mass.
