N-Z chart of the average p-n interaction energy of the last protons with the last neutrons in nuclei near Pb, extracted from a new, more extensive nuclear-mass tabulation. High energies are in red & pink; low energies in blue. In both the Z ≤ 82, N ≤ 126 and the Z > 82, N > 126 regions, the orbits of the last protons overlap strongly with the last neutrons and the p-n interactions are correspondingly larger there.
