Structure of water confined in a single-walled carbon nanotube (orange) from a molecular-dynamics simulation. The confined water molecules take the form of a soft "ice-shell plus water-chain" structure: an ice sheath (red and white) wrapped around a 1D chain (yellow and white). Neutron-scattering studies demonstrate that this "nanotube water" shows liquidlike behavior down to 8 K.
