The cubical structure shown is a Kitaoka model of a human subacinus, the terminal diffusion cell in the lung. This model reproduces the topological complexity of real subacini and is used in a numerical study of the concentration and diffusion of oxygen (red through blue areas) to show that only about 1/3 of the total alveolar surface is active in normal breathing.
