These figures show the transformation over time of a thin layer of ice, from a disordered amorphous form to a crystalline state, as monitored through the water molecules' IR spectra. Crystallization from the amorphous state is found to begin at the surface of the ice layer; this new finding may have implications for chemical processes on interstellar and atmospheric ice particles.
