Intensity patterns of light escaping from two 2D resonators (models of the 3D silica microspheres used in an accompanying experiment). In the image on the left, light escapes primarily by refraction. With less deformation (right), refractive escape no longer dominates and emission is due to highly directional tunneling between internal and external fields.
