The figure is an atomically resolved STM image of the topmost oxygen layer in a Al2O3 film on a NaAl substrate. The unit cell is illustrated in the upper right corner; atoms with the largest apparent height are indicated by the filled-in gray circles. The zigzag pattern seen in the image is thought to result from every second oxygen atom sticking out a bit from the surface.
