Color-coded infrared image of anesthetized hornets: the 3 hornets on the left & at top are warmer than their surroundings, but the 3 hornets on the right and to right-of-center are a few degrees cooler, with isolated cold spots at the eyes & tip of the abdomen. This ability of hornets to cool parts of their bodies, even when active, suggests they have some sort of internal heat pump.
