Contour plots for the metric of a hypersurface in a 5D "black-object" spacetime, compactified in the vertical direction. As the scale of the compactified dimension is varied, the horizon topology shows an abrupt phase transition, changing from cylindrical (top, corresponding to a nonuniform black string) to spherical (bottom, corresponding to a black hole).
