Scanning-microscope image of vortex pinning in a superconductor. Starting with a high-pinning vortex phase, (figure 1), a low-pinning phase invades from the right with the application of a DC current, (figures 2-4). Increasing the current further results in the return of the high-pinning phase, (5 & 6). Finally, at higher current, a continuous vortex flow is established, (figure 8).
