Abstract

Fradkin's "compressibility under deformation" parameter ξ is calculated using the deformed Nilsson model of the nucleus. Numerical values in the range 0.21<~ξ<~+0.26 are obtained for Sm62, Gd64, Yb70, and U92 and for 0.1<~βω<~+0.3, to be compared with the empirical value ξ0.2±0.1. It is suggested that the effect comes from the saturation property of the nuclear force.
