Abstract
Chemical reactions in porous media play a pivotal role in various biological, environmental, and engineering applications, yet understanding flow-chemistry coupling within pores remains an outstanding challenge. This article examines a parallel between how chemical reaction fronts are impacted by (i) turbulence in unconfined flows, and (ii) hydrodynamic dispersion in porous media flows, even at laminar flow conditions. A regime diagram is constructed from which hitherto overlooked regime transitions are identified. The results are expected to improve our understanding of pore-scale coupling, with implications relevant to a broad range of applications.
