Reverse direct detection: Cosmic ray scattering with light dark matter

The authors obtain novel model independent constraints on the interaction cross sections of light (sub GeV) dark matter particles. In the case of dark matter proton cross section, the results are competitive with cosmological constraints. However, in the case of electron dark matter cross section, the results of this paper improve the existing ones by one to two orders of magnitude.

Inflation sets out to solve several problems (horizon, flatness, homogeneity) at once in order to avoid extreme fine-tuning in Hot Big Bang cosmology, but the question of possible fine-tuning of the initial conditions to achieve sufficient inflation counteracts this feature. The authors present a refreshing new idea to quantify this fine-tuning, that avoids regularization ambiguities of previous approaches and shows that it depends on the value of the cosmological constant in the past.

Existence and stability of marginally trapped surfaces in black-hole spacetimes

In numerical relativity, marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTS) provide an invaluable tool for tracking black holes in real time, with the ongoing simulation. In this paper, the authors demonstrate that contrary to popular belief, these MOTS are actually stable under time evolution with their stability determined by a single real parameter. The technique presented here should prove effective in the study of the intermediate stages of black hole mergers, which are not accessible to the usual techniques.

The authors develop a new formalism to analyze observations in geometrical optics, and apply it to cosmology. This formalism provides a uniform approach to optical phenomena in curved spacetimes and, as an application, the authors propose a new definition of parallax distance and discuss its application to cosmic tomography.

The authors investigate the infrared behaviour of gravitational radiation emitted from the scattering of massless particles at very high energies. By employing a semi-classical method – eikonal approach – they compute subleading corrections to the spectrum of gravitational radiation emitted, and find that these corrections give rise to a local maximum at frequency ω~0.5/b, where b is the impact parameter of the scattering.

The authors investigate the infrared behaviour of gravitational radiation emitted from the scattering of massless particles at very high energies. By employing a semi-classical method – eikonal approach – they compute subleading corrections to the spectrum of gravitational radiation emitted, and find that these corrections give rise to a local maximum at frequency ω~0.5/b, where b is the impact parameter of the scattering.
