Search for ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger observatory

A. Aab et al. (Pierre Auger Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 94, 082002 (2016) - Published 3 October, 2016

The existence of magnetic monopoles is an interesting theoretical possibility generically predicted by grand unified theories (GUTs). Based on over 8 years of data, the Pierre Auger Observatory reports no detection of monopoles but do set the best limits to date on the flux of ultrarelativistic intermediate-mass monopoles by looking for the distinctive signatures of monopole-induced air showers.

Theoretical physics implications of the binary black-hole mergers GW150914 and GW151226

Nicolás Yunes, Kent Yagi, and Frans Pretorius

Phys. Rev. D 94, 084002 (2016) - Published 4 October, 2016

The recent gravitational wave observations GW150914 and GW151226 reported by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations confirmed a key prediction of general relativity (GR). In this recent Physical Review D paper, the authors ask whether these events are also compatible with a variety of modifications of GR and alternative theories of gravity. Phonon spectrum and correlations in a transonic flow of an atomic Bose gas

Florent Michel, Jean-François Coupechoux, and Renaud Parentani

Phys. Rev. D 94, 084027 (2016) - Published 20 October, 2016

This paper provides a theoretical underpinning to the recent experimental observation of the analog Hawking effect in a BEC system, while also raising some relevant issues that need to be addressed to make the observation entirely reliable. Additionally, the paper unveils a new effect through the density two point function, which will certainly trigger new work in the active field of analog gravity.

Gravitational action with null boundaries

Luis Lehner, Robert C. Myers, Eric Poisson, and Rafael D. Sorkin

Phys. Rev. D 94, 084046 (2016) - Published 26 October, 2016

The present paper provides a complete treatment of boundary terms in general relativity to include cases with lightlike boundary segments along with the usual spacelike and timelike ones. Applications of this exhaustive treatment includes a recent conjecture on computational complexity in the context of AdS/CFT.

Multi-Higgs-boson production in gluon fusion at 100 TeV

Céline Degrande, Valentin V. Khoze, and Olivier Mattelaer

Phys. Rev. D 94, 085031 (2016) - Published 28 October, 2016

For high multiplicities of Higgs bosons produced in gluon-gluon fusion, the cross-section appears to grow with increasing numbers of Higgs due to the factorial explosion of relevant graphs. This ultimately signals a breakdown of perturbation theory in electroweak physics. By estimating the leading contributions to these cross-sections the authors find that such effects would be observable at a next-generation 50 or 100 TeV collider.

Phys.
