Effects of Rayleigh scattering on the CMB and cosmic structure

Elham Alipour, Kris Sigurdson, and Christopher M. Hirata

Phys. Rev. D 91, 083520 (2015) - Published 16 April, 2015

During and post recombination, photons interact with neutral Hydrogen and Helium atoms via Rayleigh scattering, on top of Thomson scattering. The frequency dependence of the Rayleigh cross section has a profound effect on CMB anisotropies as well as on the distribution of matter. This paper develops a novel insight on the effects of Rayleigh scattering on cosmological power spectra.

Invariant characterization of the Kerr spacetime: Locating the horizon and measuring the mass and spin of rotating black holes using curvature invariants

Majd Abdelqader and Kayll Lake

Phys. Rev. D 91, 084017 (2015) - Published 7 April, 2015

While the solutions of Einstein’s equations are often expressed in terms of coordinates, their physical properties are independent of the coordinate choice. The authors show how all the properties that characterize a large class of stationary black holes can be expressed in terms of coordinate-independent curvature invariants.
