Abstract
A measurement of the cross section for the production of isolated prompt photons in collisions at a center-of-mass energy is presented. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The cross section is measured as a function of photon pseudorapidity and transverse energy in the kinematic range and in the regions and . The results are compared to leading-order parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations agree well with the measured cross sections as a function of and .

ATLAS uses a right-handed coordinate system with its origin at the nominal interaction point (IP) in the center of the detector, and the axis along the beam line. The axis points from the IP to the center of the LHC ring, and the axis points upwards. Cylindrical coordinates are used in the transverse plane, being the azimuthal angle around the beam line. Observables labeled “transverse” are projected into the plane. The pseudorapidity is defined in terms of the polar angle as .
