Large rapidity gap events and meson exchange in deep inelastic scattering

Abstract
The possible origins of the large rapidity gap events observed at DESY HERA are discussed. It is pointed out that meson exchange in deep inelastic scattering has a large contribution to the occurrence of such events. Further experiments are suggested which can differentiate the proposed picture from the others, in particular, from Pomeron exchange.
