Vanishing Longitudinal Cross Sections and Operator Schwinger Terms

Abstract
We show that a vanishing total cross section for virtual longitudinal photons on a handronic target is compatible with the presence of nontrivial operator-valued Schwinger terms appearing in the one-particle matrix element of the commutator of two electromagnetic currents. However, this requires a violation of either Bjorken scaling or the usual subtraction assumptions on virtual Compton amplitudes.
