Abstract

Using nuclear multiple-scattering theory as a guide, we obtain generalizations of the Glauber formulas for pion-deuteron elastic scattering which incorporate the internal motion of the nucleons in the deuteron. Application of our formulas at 766 MeV yields results in reasonable agreement with experiment. The incorporation of nuclear Fermi motion induces a smoothing of the momentum-transfer dependence of the differential cross section.
