Helicity dependence of the νe energy spectrum from the decay of unpolarized muons

Abstract

The energy distribution for left- and right-handed νe from the decay of unpolarized μ+ has been calculated on the basis of the most general four-fermion interaction. The left-handed νe can be detected by the reaction C12(νe,e)N12 (g.s.). A measurement of the total rate with an error of < 5% will improve present limits on the scalar coupling gLLS. The energy distribution for a left-handed νe depends on the parameter ωL which corresponds to the Michel parameter ϱ of the electron energy spectrum from muon decay. The standard model predicts ωL=0. The new parameter ωL can be determined with a precision of ΔωL=0.026 for 100 events corresponding to |gRLS+2gRLT|0.37, where gRLS and gRLT represent scalar and tensor interactions with left-handed νe and right-handed ν¯μ.
