Helicity dependence of the energy spectrum from the decay of unpolarized muons

Abstract
The energy distribution for left- and right-handed from the decay of unpolarized has been calculated on the basis of the most general four-fermion interaction. The left-handed can be detected by the reaction . A measurement of the total rate with an error of < 5% will improve present limits on the scalar coupling . The energy distribution for a left-handed depends on the parameter which corresponds to the Michel parameter of the electron energy spectrum from muon decay. The standard model predicts . The new parameter can be determined with a precision of for 100 events corresponding to , where and represent scalar and tensor interactions with left-handed and right-handed .
