Abstract

It is pointed out that gauge symmetries of gauge theories without matter fields in multiply connected spaces can be broken by nontrivial boundary conditions. An example of SU(3) gauge theory in flat S1×R3 spacetime is examined. In particular, the symmetry-breaking pattern is determined in the one-loop approximation assuming that the vacuum is homogeneous in space. This symmetry-breaking pattern cannot be achieved by a Higgs field in the adjoint representation.
