Abstract

We treat in the following the problem of finding upper and lower bounds for the absorptive part of elastic scattering amplitudes given the total and elastic cross section, unitarity, and a monotonicity constraint on the successive partial waves. The bounds are derived using the generalized Lagrange-multiplier technique due to Blankenbecler and Einhorn. We investigate in some detail the question of which of the many solutions given by that method should be chosen, and also discuss the physical motivation for the monotonicity assumption.
