Abstract

The experimental evidence regarding a light Higgs boson is reviewed. It is shown that a light Higgs boson with almost any mass between 14 MeV/c2 and 1 GeV/c2 is still allowed by existing data. The only limit in this range comes from B-decay data which, for sufficiently large values of the top-quark mass, excludes a Higgs boson with a mass between 2mμ and ∼700 MeV/c2. Discussions of light-Higgs-boson emission in the decays of K, π, μ, τ, η, and Υ are also given.

In this, and further instances, we have used typical experimental parameters and published experimental cuts to conservatively estimate the range of validity for the constraints on a light Higgs boson. The range of validity would probably be even smaller if other details such as experimental efficiencies and correlations were properly taken into account.

  24. The paper by Avery et al. (Ref. 23) presents a limit of B3<= 0.0031 but implies that experimental cuts make this number inapplicable when the muon pair results from the decay of a light Higgs boson. The limit quoted is explicitly given in their paper for the case of light-Higgs-boson emission and decay.
