Geodesic motion in a Kaluza-Klein bubble spacetime

Abstract

The motion of massive and massless test particles in the geometry of the five-dimensional ‘‘Witten bubble’’ spacetime is explored by obtaining the effective radial potential governing this motion. It is found that massive particles are always in bound orbits. Massless particle orbits have a turning point near the bubble wall, but extend to infinity. These results are consistent with the conception of the bubble wall as a perfectly reflecting, expanding sphere whose expansion rate increases with time.
