Abstract

We study meson-baryon scattering in the nonrelativistic quark model, to leading order in 1/Nc. The problem is elegantly expressed as a matrix equation T=Π⋅T, where T is the scattering matrix and Π is a projection operator expressible as an 18j symbol of the second kind. The transformation that diagonalizes Π is the crossing relation between s-channel and t-channel partial-wave amplitudes. The solutions to the equation are those scattering amplitudes which satisfy the ‘‘It=Jt rule’’ and the ‘‘proportionality rule,’’ two large-Nc selection rules which have been derived using Skyrmion and one-boson-exchange techniques as well. The projection-equation approach is also extended to operators other than the the meson-baryon T matrix.
