Abstract
The parameter-dependent topological invariant associated with a Dirac operator on an open space is investigated for the case of the fermion-vortex system. It is shown that the parameter dependence of the topological invariant can be ascribed to the spectral asymmetry at the threshold of the Dirac operator. Calculating the topological invariant in a naive way without recourse to the trace formula, the physical background of the threshold asymmetry is clarified.
