Measurability of the Casimir effect in microchips

Abstract
The paper by Srivastava et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 2246 (1985)] draws attention to the great relative magnitude of the Casimir energy in microchips. As Stroscio has later pointed out [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 2107 (1986)] there exists a dynamical restriction here as regards the possible measurability of the QED effects: the dynamical processes in usual microchips are much slower than the vacuum fluctuations. We show that the dynamical restriction pointed out by Stroscio can be overcome, in principle, if one leaves the usual plane-plate geometry and instead considers spherical capacitor geometry.
