Abstract
The structure of gauge anomalies for the fermion field with general nonderivative couplings to various external fields is considered in -dimensional spacetime. We prove that no genuine, Abelian or non-Abelian, anomaly involving non-gauge-type external fields (e.g., scalar fields, tensor fields) exists, thus leaving only the pure gauge-field anomalies as a source for the obstruction to gauge invariance.
