Abstract

By relating the bare and renormalized coupling constants in QCD in dimensional regularization by a general Laurent expansion, we are able to construct a renormalization scheme whose β function consists of exactly one term. This term coincides with the one-loop term found in conventional treatments. The theorem of 't Hooft (the scheme independence of the first two terms in the β function) is circumvented by using a nonanalytic coupling-constant transformation.
