Abstract

The low-lying S states of the charmonium system are used as a test case for the application of the Isgur-Karl model to mesons. Fitting exactly to the ψ and ψ masses, the masses of the ηc and ηc are obtained within 0.7% of the experimental values. The constituent mass of the c quark is predicted to be 1450 MeV.
