Abstract
A length prescription for arbitrary observer sets in curved spacetimes is presented which resolves the "disagreement" between the formulations of Gautreau and Hoffmann and that of Landau and Lifshitz. Using generalized observer sets, new forms are obtained for the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström line elements which have no coordinate singularities.
