Abstract
A study of prompt production has been made using the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber exposed to a low-energy beam. We found eleven annihilation events with pairs of invariant mass greater than the mass. The background to direct pair production comes mainly from and Dalitz pairs. To determine these backgrounds, we have measured the inclusive and production rates using externally converted rays. We find and at the 90% confidence level. The () Dalitz background plus other small backgrounds yield events. The remaining events yield a 90%-confidence-level upper limit for the ratio of prompt pairs to production of 4 × .
