Abstract
The qualitative behavior of large-angle scattering by a rotationally invariant optical potential is investigated using the WKB approximation. It is shown that the strong dependence exhibited by elastic proton-proton scattering requires an energy-dependent potential. The source of the inaccuracy of the eikonal approximation, at large angles, is found by comparing eikonal phase shifts with those given by the WKB approximation.
