Bound on Virtual Compton Scattering at 185 and 460 MeV/c2

Abstract

The photoproduction of asymmetric electron-positron pairs from carbon has been measured to study the production of virtual photons of energies (masses) 1.8 GeV (185 MeV/c2) and 4.5 GeV (460 MeV/c2). The interference between such a Compton production mechanism and the dominant Bethe-Heitler production was determined by observing the change in the yield for electron-positron pairs when the electron and positron were interchanged. The measured interference cross section is consistent with zero and with most models treating Compton production as due to the decay of the ρ meson into electron-positron pairs.
