Effect of nuclear deformation on high-energy proton-nucleus scattering

Abstract

In order to determine the effect of ellipsoidal nuclear deformation on diffractive proton-nucleus scattering, an accurate computational scheme is developed, starting from the high-energy optical model. Numerical results are compared with data on p-U (deformed) and p-Pb (spherical) scattering at 19.3 GeV, obtained by Bellettini et al. Contrary to earlier speculations, it is concluded that the deformation effect is barely visible in this experiment. Multiple Coulomb scattering produces a more dramatic blurring of the data than the intrinsic contribution of nuclear shape.
