The lowest $T=2\mathrm{}$ states of ${}_{}{}^{20}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ne}$, ${}_{}{}^{24}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Mg}$, ${}_{}{}^{28}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Si}$, ${}_{}{}^{32}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{S}$, and ${}_{}{}^{40}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ca}$ have been formed using the ($p, t$) reaction. The isospin-forbidden proton ($\Delta T=1\mathrm{} or 2$) and $\alpha$-particle ($\Delta T=2\mathrm{}$) decay modes of these states have been determined by counting triton-proton and triton-$\alpha$ coincidence events. The major decay modes of the states are ${}_{}{}^{20}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ne}({\alpha }_1+{\alpha }_2, {\alpha }_3+{\alpha }_4)$, ${}_{}{}^{24}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Mg}\left(p_0\right)$, ${}_{}{}^{28}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Si}\left({\alpha }_0\right)$, ${}_{}{}^{32}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{S}\left(p_0\right)$, ${}_{}{}^{40}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ca}\left({\alpha }_0\right)$. Simple Coulomb calculations were performed for ${}_{}{}^{40}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Ca}$; these assumed pure shell-model configurations and considered isospin mixing in only the ($1d, 1f$) shells. They did not predict the relatively large $\Delta T=2\mathrm{}$ isospin impurities necessary to explain the observed $\alpha$-particle decay.

Cross sections for the production of ${}_{}{}^{18}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{F}$, ${}_{}{}^{22}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Na}$, and ${}_{}{}^{24}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Na}$ have been determined from the separated isotopes of magnesium, silicon, and sulfur, using 300- and 400-MeV protons. These values, together with previous measurements, provide data for targets of each mass number of 23 to 34 inclusive for ${}_{}{}^{18}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{F}$ and ${}_{}{}^{22}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Na}$ and from 25 to 34 inclusive for ${}_{}{}^{24}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Na}$. The main feature of the results is that the cross section is highest for those targets having the $\frac{N}{Z}$ closest to that of the products. Thus, events involving the loss of about the same number of neutrons as protons have the highest probability. Cascade-evaporation calculations were performed for 400-MeV protons on each of these nuclides. The calculations reproduce the experimental trends.

The elastic and inelastic scattering of iron capture $\gamma$ rays from the 7.64-MeV $M1\mathrm{}$ levels in ${\mathrm{Cd}}^{112}$ and ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{62}$ were studied with a Ge(Li) spectrometer. Eleven energy levels in ${\mathrm{Cd}}^{112}$ and three in ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{62}$ observed in this experiment are compared with the levels excited in ($d, p$) experiments. Angular distribution measurements were made for four strong transitions in ${\mathrm{Cd}}^{112}$ and two in ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{62}$, giving the following spin assignments: ${\mathrm{Cd}}^{112}$: 0.62-MeV level (2), 1.23-MeV (0), 1.88-MeV (0), 7.64-MeV (1); ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{62}$: 2.06-MeV (0), 7.64-MeV (1). In both nuclei, only the $0^{+}$ member of the two-quadrupole phonon triplet ($0^{+}$, $2^{+}$, $4^{+}$) is strongly excited in this experiment, indicating very different components in the wave functions of the $0^{+}$ and $2^{+}$ members.

Employing ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{48}$ and ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{56}$ as cores for ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{52}$ and ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{60}$, respectively, the shell-model properties of these nuclei are described using the renormalized reaction matrix elements of the Hamada-Johnston nucleon-nucleon potential. For ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{52}$, the seniorities 2 and 4 of the ${f_{\frac{7}{2}}}^4$ configuration are mixed through intermediate states of other configurations in an attempt to explain the branching ratios from $J=6\mathrm{}$ and $J=5\mathrm{}$ levels to the low-lying $J=4\mathrm{}$ levels; and also the effect of increasing the configuration space is explicitly studied. A qualitative agreement between the calculated and experimental spectra is found, and the wave functions thus obtained are not found to be suitable for the description of transition rates. For ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{60}$, the effect of including the additional $g_{\frac{9}{2}}$ orbital is also investigated. The calculated energy levels agree fairly well with the experimental levels, but the wave functions do not provide a satisfactory explanation for the observed transition rates. The even Ni isotopes are then described in the framework of the modified Tamm-Dancoff approximation (MTDA). The agreement for the energy levels for ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{60}$ between the shell-model and the MTDA results is of the same quality, but the MTDA result indeed shows an improvement over the shell-model results in describing the vibrational characteristic of the second excited $2^{+}$ state. The MTDA results for Ni isotopes appear to be fairly satisfactory.

The multipole mixing ratios for the 53.17-, 79.63-, 80.99-, 160.63-, and 302.83-keV transitions in ${}_{}{}^{133}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Cs}$ were measured via $\gamma -\gamma$ directional correlation measurements employing two Ge(Li) detectors. Correlations for the cascades 276-161, 356-81, 303-81, 80-81, (276-80)+(276-81), 53-384, and 53-303 keV were investigated. Results for the last three correlations have not been reported previously. The present results are consistent with a $J^{\pi }$ sequence of ${\frac{7}{2}}^{+}$, ${\frac{5}{2}}^{+}$, ${\frac{5}{2}}^{+}$, ${\frac{3}{2}}^{+}$, and ${\mathrm{½}}^{+}$ for the ground state and the 81-, 161-, 384-, and 437-keV levels in ${}_{}{}^{133}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Cs}$. With the 276-, 356-, and 384-keV transitions assumed to be pure $E2\mathrm{}$, the mixing ratios $\delta$ for $\frac{E2\mathrm{}}{M1\mathrm{}}$ obtained are 161 keV: ${-1.03\mathrm{}}_{-0.13\mathrm{}}^{+0.08\mathrm{}}$; 81 keV: ${+0.148\mathrm{}}_{-0.008\mathrm{}}^{+0.009\mathrm{}}$; 303 keV: ${-0.164\mathrm{}}_{-0.072\mathrm{}}^{+0.105\mathrm{}}$; 80 keV; +0.022±0.040 (average from two independent correlations); and 53 keV: ${-0.114\mathrm{}}_{-0.047\mathrm{}}^{+0.046\mathrm{}}$ (average from two independent correlations). These results are compared with previously reported mixing ratios from $\gamma -\gamma$ and $e_K-\gamma$ correlations and from ${\alpha }_K$, $\frac{K}{L}$, and $L$-subshell ratio measurements. From these results and previously reported lifetimes, $\gamma$-ray-transition retardation and enhancement factors are calculated and compared with predictions of current models for the nucleus.

The proton pickup reaction ($t, \alpha$) has been used to investigate states in ${}_{}{}^{207}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Tl}$ and ${}_{}{}^{206}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Tl}$. The angular distributions resulting from populating five states in ${}_{}{}^{207}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Tl}$ which are predominantly single-hole in character have been analyzed to obtain spectroscopic factors. In the ${}_{}{}^{207}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Pb}(t, \alpha ){}_{}{}^{206}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Tl}$ spectrum, doublets corresponding to the interaction of proton holes in the four lowest-lying orbits with a $3p_{\frac{1}{2}}$ neutron hole are the strongest states observed. The $2d_j$ proton-hole strength is found in several levels of ${}_{}{}^{206}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Tl}$. The positions and intensities of the observed levels are in quantitative agreement with the nuclear-structure calculations of Kuo.

An angular-correlation setup was applied to measure the $e-\gamma$ angular correlations involving the 570- and 1064-keV transitions in ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{207}$. The use of a Si(Li) semiconductor counter as an electron detector allowed the separation of the three $K$, $L$, and $M$ conversion lines for both transitions. $\gamma -\gamma$ angular correlations were also performed. Particle parameters $b_2$ were thus esperimentally determined. The values obtained for the $K$, $L$, and $M$ shells were 1.19(7), 1.13(7), and 1.41(11) for the 570-keV transition and 1.05(5), 1.06(12), and 1.16(15) for the 1064-keV transition. Particle parameters $b_4$ were calculated from the $b_2$ values through a recursion relation. The coefficients $A_4\mathrm{}\left(e\right)\mathrm{}$ could not be determined directly from experiment owing to the lack of statistics, but they were obtained through the $b_4$ particle parameters and the $A_4\left(\gamma \right)$ coefficients. The values for the $K$, $L$, and $M$ shells one -0.020(8), -0.025(9), and ∼-0 are for the $e\left(570\right)-\gamma \mathrm{}\left(1064\right)\mathrm{}$ angular correlations; and -0.049(16), -0.051(30), and -0.072(40) for the $e\left(1064\right)-\gamma \mathrm{}\left(570\right)\mathrm{}$ angular correlations.

Differential cross sections for ${}_{}{}^{116}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Sn}(\alpha , {}_{}{}^3{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{He})$ with 65.7-MeV $\alpha$ particles were measured from 15° to 80°. Data were obtained for ${}_{}{}^3{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{He}$ groups corresponding to excitation energies of 0.0, 0.16, 0.32, 0.72, 1.03, 1.25, 1.58, and 3.20 MeV in ${}_{}{}^{117}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Sn}$. The angular distributions were well fitted by zero-range distorted-wave predictions. The spectroscopic factors are generally in good agreement with those obtained in a ($d, p$) experiment.

The changes in binding energy of ${}_{114}{}^{}{}_{}{}^{}X_{}^{298}{}_{}{}^{}$ under deformation into prolate spheroidal shapes have been calculated using the statistical theory of nuclei. The density is restricted only by the requirement that each equidense surface is a spheroid. It is found that the energy is minimized when the density has an approximately uniform surface thickness around the nucleus. To first order the change in binding energy is given well by the liquid-drop model, but at large deformation the statistical theory predicts less drop in energy and, consequently, a slightly more stable nucleus.

High-resolution Ge(Li) and Si(Li) x-ray detectors [404- and 290-eV full width at half-maximum (FWHM) at 6.4 keV, respectively] were employed to study the singles and coincidence spectra of x rays and $\gamma$ rays from the decays of ${\mathrm{Tm}}^{170}$ and ${\mathrm{Tm}}^{171}$. Measurements of the rates of $L_{\alpha }$, $L_{\beta }$, and $L_{\gamma }$ x-ray emission in coincidence with $K_{\alpha 1}$ and $K_{\alpha 2}$ x rays yielded the following values for $L_2$ and $L_3$ subshell-fluorescence yields (${\omega }_2, {\omega }_3$), $L_2-L_{3}X$ Coster-Kronig transition probability ($f_{23}$), and relative $L$ x-ray intensity ratios ($s_2, s_3$): ${\omega }_2=0.182\mathrm{}\pm 0.011$, ${\omega }_3=0.183\mathrm{}\pm 0.011$, $f_{23}=0.170\mathrm{}\pm 0.009$, $s_2=0.192\mathrm{}\pm 0.010$, and $s_3=0.165\mathrm{}\pm 0.009$. The $K$-conversion coefficient of the 84.3-keV $E2\mathrm{}$ transition in ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{170}$ is found to be 1.39±0.04 by the measurement of the intensity ratio for the $K$-x-ray and $\gamma$ transitions (XPG method). The $K$-conversion coefficient of the 66.7-keV transition in ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{171}$ is found to be 7.45±0.36, which leads to a value of 0.34 for the mixing ratio of $\frac{E2\mathrm{}}{M1\mathrm{}}$. The orbital-electron-capture branchings of ${\mathrm{Tm}}^{170}$ to the first excited state (78.6 keV) and to the ground state in ${\mathrm{Er}}^{170}$ are determined to be 0.04 and 0.10%, respectively.

A method is described which allows the calculation of the spin dependence of the probability for fission of compound nuclei from experimental data. The method is applied to the study of the behavior of ${\mathrm{Re}}^{181}$ compound nuclei formed in three different ways with an excitation energy of 70 MeV: ${\mathrm{C}}^{12}$+${\mathrm{Tm}}^{169}$, ${\mathrm{O}}^{16}$+${\mathrm{Ho}}^{165}$, and ${\mathrm{Ne}}^{22}$+${\mathrm{Tb}}^{159}$. The experimental fission cross sections were taken from Sikkeland. The fission probability is found to increase with increasing angular momentum in accord with liquid-drop-model calculations.

With semiconductor detectors and time-of-flight equipment, measurements, similar to those made in a previous study of uranium fission, have been made on members of fragment pairs resulting from fission of bismuth induced by 2.9-GeV protons. Fragment-pair angular correlation and fragment energies were measured in addition to velocity of one fragment; single-fragment mass spectra were thus determined. It was inferred from the mean fragment masses that the distribution of cascade deposition energies associated with bismuth fission is narrower than it is for uranium fission; neither low deposition energies nor very high deposition energies contribute appreciably to bismuth fission, although they are both important in uranium fission. The mean fragment velocity is found to be identical with that for uranium fission. It is concluded that the mechanism of high-energy bismuth fission is essentially indistinguishable from that operative in fission at low excitation energies generally.

Cross sections for the production of the light elements lithium, beryllium, and boron by proton bombardment of ${}_{}{}^{12}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{C}$ were measured for proton energies between 21.7 and 44.0 MeV. Time-of-flight methods were used to identify the masses of ions recoiling from a thin target into a semiconductor detector. The results are related to current models on the origin of these light elements, and are consistent with a suggestion that the ${}_{}{}^{11}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{B}$/${}_{}{}^{10}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{B}$ isotopic ratio has remained unaltered at its formation value.

Levels of the nucleus ${\mathrm{U}}^{235}$, populated in the reactions ${\mathrm{U}}^{234}(d, p){\mathrm{U}}^{235}$ and ${\mathrm{U}}^{236}(d, t){\mathrm{U}}^{235}$ induced by 12-MeV deuterons from the Argonne tandem Van de Graaff, were analyzed with a magnetic spectrograph. Most of the observed levels were identified as members of rotational bands built on the single-particle states of a deformed central field. The level assignments were made on the basis of relative populations of presumed members of each rotational band, ratios of the cross sections at 90° and 140°, and $\frac{(d, p)}{(d, t)}$ cross-section ratios. Pairing effects were calculated for the observed spectrum, and a single-particle scheme was extracted from the data. This single-particle scheme was compared with the calculations of Nilsson and Rost. Levels not predicted on the basis of the single-particle models were observed at excitations as low as 700 keV. Some of these levels, presumably vibrational excitations, were found to have cross sections comparable to those of single-particle states.

Calculations of the binding energies of $p$-shell hypernuclei have been carried out treating all the nucleons and the $\Lambda$ self-consistently. The Tabakin potential is used for the $\mathrm{NN}$ interaction and a simple central force which fits $\Lambda N$ scattering is used for the $\Lambda -N$ system. The binding energies obtained exceed those observed. The dynamical aspects of the hypernuclear system are also discussed, as well as various correction terms. Finally, a comparison is made with other hypernuclear calculations.

Isomeric states of Po isotopes from $A=204\mathrm{}$ to $A=211\mathrm{}$ have been investigated by means of the nanosecond time analysis of $\mathrm{Pb}(\alpha , xn)$ $\gamma$ rays produced in natural beam bunches of a cyclotron. In addition to those already reported, new isomeric states have been revealed systematically. The following half-lives have been measured: ${}_{}{}^{204}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Po}$: 190±20 nsec; ${}_{}{}^{206}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Po}$: 160±40 nsec; ${}_{}{}^{208}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Po}$: 380±100 nsec; and ${}_{}{}^{210}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Po}$: 110±10 nsec. The possibility that such half-lives are associated with the expected 8+ state of predominant configuration ${h_{\frac{9}{2}}}^2\mathrm{}\left(p\right)\mathrm{}$ is discussed. Another half-life (24 nsec) found in ${}_{}{}^{210}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Po}$ was assigned as a ($h_{\frac{9}{2}}{i}_{\frac{13}{2}}$) 11 - isomeric state. Odd isotopes show three-particle isomeric states in addition to the $i_{\frac{13}{2}}\mathrm{}\left(n\right)\mathrm{}$ isomeric state. Several characteristic features revealed in this study are discussed.

Lifetimes, nuclear $g$ factors, and $\frac{E2\mathrm{}}{M1\mathrm{}}$ mixing ratios have been determined in ${\mathrm{Os}}^{192}$ and ${\mathrm{Pt}}^{192}$, and some previous determinations reevaluated. The following values have been established. For ${\mathrm{Os}}^{192}$: $g_2=+0.29\mathrm{}\pm 0.05$; $\delta \mathrm{}\left(484\right)=+{{7.6}_{-1.3\mathrm{}}}^{+2.4\mathrm{}}$. For ${\mathrm{Pt}}^{192}$: ${\tau }_2=50.0\mathrm{}\pm 3.4$ psec; ${{\tau }_2}^{\prime }=29\mathrm{}\pm 3$ psec; $g_2=+0.296\mathrm{}\pm 0.022$; ${g_2}^{\prime }=+0.29\mathrm{}\pm 0.05$; $\delta \mathrm{}\left(604\right)=+2.5\mathrm{}\pm 0.2$; $\delta \mathrm{}\left(308\right)=-{{6.3}_{-0.6\mathrm{}}}^{+0.5\mathrm{}}$. Nuclear magnetic moments are analyzed in terms of Greiner's vibrational-rotational model, transition probabilities and $\frac{E2\mathrm{}}{M1\mathrm{}}$ mixing ratios are compared to the theoretical predictions of Kumar and Baranger's model.

Independent fission yields of ${}_{}{}^{95}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Zr}$ from thermal neutron fission of ${}_{}{}^{235}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{U}$ and ${}_{}{}^{233}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{U}$ have been determined to be 0.004±0.002 and 0.034±0.006, respectively. From the values obtained, together with previously measured yields, the width of the charge dispersion for mass-95 fission products in ${}_{}{}^{235}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{U}$ fission was found to be 0.53±0.03 in terms of the width parameter $\sigma$ of the normal Gaussian curve. An upper limit of 0.56 for $\sigma$ in the case of mass-95 products from ${}_{}{}^{233}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{U}$ fission indicates that charge dispersion in this system is similar to that for ${}_{}{}^{235}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{U}$.

Independent yields of ${}_{}{}^{132}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, ${}_{}{}^{133}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, and ${}_{}{}^{134}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$ have been measured from thermal-neutron-induced fission of ${}_{}{}^{233}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{U}$. The yields, each expressed as the ratio of iodine independent yield to iodine cumulative yield, are 0.06±0.03, 0.21±0.03, and 0.370±0.013 for ${}_{}{}^{132}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, ${}_{}{}^{133}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, and ${}_{}{}^{134}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, respectively. Values of $Z_p$ estimated from these yields with the assumption that charge distribution can be represented by a Gaussian curve with standard deviation $\sigma$ of 0.59±0.06 are ${51.58}_{-0.30\mathrm{}}^{+0.21\mathrm{}}$, ${52.02}_{-0.12\mathrm{}}^{+0.10\mathrm{}}$, and 52.33±0.03 for ${}_{}{}^{132}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, ${}_{}{}^{133}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, and ${}_{}{}^{134}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{I}$, respectively. The values of $Z_p$ are consistent with those previously reported for other chains in this mass region.

We report recoil angular distribution measurements from (${\mathrm{C}}^{12}$, $\mathrm{xn}$) compound-nucleus reactions with ${\mathrm{Sn}}^{118}$, ${\mathrm{Sn}}^{119}$, ${\mathrm{Sn}}^{120}$, and ${\mathrm{Sn}}^{122}$. In each case, the final product investigated was ${\mathrm{Ba}}^{126}$, corresponding to reactions in which 4, 5, 6, and 8 neutrons are emitted. The data have been analyzed to yield information on the average total energies of neutrons and photons emitted in the deexcitation of the compound nuclei. Evidence is presented for significant competition between neutron evaporation and $\gamma$-ray deexcitation processes, particularly for the $4n$ and $5n$ reactions. At the higher bombarding energies, the total energy dissipated as $\gamma$ radiation is an appreciable fraction of the available decay energy.
