Probing hidden spin order with interpretable machine learning

Jonas Greitemann, Ke Liu (刘科 子竞), and Lode Pollet

Phys. Rev. B 99, 060404(R) (2019) - Published 11 February, 2019

Various types of multipolar order are ubiquitously found in frustrated spin systems, yet their identification is difficult and often causes confusion with spin liquids. In this work, by amalgamating the theory of orientational tensors and the strong interpretability of a particular machine-learning technique, the authors introduce an algorithm to detect the occurrence and the order parameter of hidden multipolar order and demonstrate its advantage over traditional methods. This approach provides a new scheme in the search for novel magnets as well as a comprehensive way to scrutinize spin liquid candidates.

Quantum many-body dynamics of the Einstein–de Haas effect

Phys. Rev. B 99, 064428 (2019) - Published 20 February, 2019

What is the shortest possible timescale of the Einstein–de Haas effect? Addressing this problem theoretically poses a monumental challenge, for it involves an infinite number of coupled quantum angular momenta. Here, the authors formulate for the first time the problem in a rotationally invariant way, thereby enabling its solution in terms of angulon quasiparticles. Intriguingly, the first calculations reveal already that transfer between electron spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom can occur on the femtosecond time scale.

Optical characteristics of charge carrier transfer across interfaces between YBa2Cu3O6+δ and La0.7Ca0.3MnO3

Phys. Rev. B 99, 064501 (2019) - Published 6 February, 2019

Transition metal oxides undergo many different phase transitions when doped with charge carriers. Thanks to recent advances in the synthesis of metal-oxide heterostructures, doping can now be achieved through charge transfer across interfaces. This paper reports spectral ellipsometry measurements on multilayers of superconducting cuprates and ferromagnetic manganates and demonstrates that the optical spectra reveal fingerprints of interfacial charge transfer. Optical spectroscopy can thus serve as a nondestructive probe of the doping level at buried metal-oxide interfaces.
