Quasinormal mode expansion in thin elastic plates

Benjamin Vial, Marc Martí Sabaté, Richard Wiltshaw, Sébastien Guenneau, and Richard V. Craster

Phys. Rev. B 110, 174305 (2024) - Published 15 November, 2024

The authors present here a quasinormal mode (QNM) framework to optimize wave control in thin elastic plates. This model simplifies complex wave interactions, enabling efficient simulations and precise manipulation of resonant modes. By integrating gradient-based optimization, the authors demonstrate control over resonator parameters, achieving quasibound states and tailored eigenfrequency placements. This approach offers a powerful tool for designing elastic metamaterials and sources with customized responses, advancing applications in wave manipulation and control.

Circular dichroism experiments at the L edge of magnetic transition metals enabled by elliptically polarized pulses from a seeded free-electron laser

C. Spezzani et al.

Phys. Rev. B 110, 174409 (2024) - Published 6 November, 2024

The authors demonstrate the generation of elliptically polarized femtosecond pulses from a seeded free electron laser (FEL) in the 700–800 eV range. Using a variable-polarization undulator, they achieved on-axis elliptical polarization at the third harmonic of FEL’s fundamental wavelength, enabling studies based on magnetic circular dichroism at the Fe L2,3 edge. These results pave the way for investigations of transition metals, covering both the M and L edges at the FERMI FEL at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.

Quantum kinetic theory of quadratic responses

M. Mehraeen

Phys. Rev. B 110, 174423 (2024) - Published 14 November, 2024

A recurring research theme in linear response theory is the attempt to reconcile semiclassical and quantum transport. Starting from the quantum Liouville equation for the disorder-averaged density operator, this work presents a comprehensive theory of nonlinear responses in the presence of an electrostatic interaction and disorder. In addition to generalizing the equations of motion of carrier dynamics, several unexplored scattering and conductivity channels are uncovered, revealing the rich interplay between quantum geometry and disorder in the nonlinear response regime.

Bond disorder in extended Heisenberg-Kitaev models: Spin textures and in-gap states in the high-field regime

Georgia Fragkopoulou and Matthias Vojta

Phys. Rev. B 110, 174444 (2024) - Published 25 November, 2024

Motivated by experimental results obtained for the layered Kitaev magnet α-RuCl3, the authors investigate here the effect of quenched disorder in extended Heisenberg-Kitaev models. Defects are shown to introduce local spin textures and to induce magnetic states inside the excitation gap of the high-field phase, with both phenomena strongly depending on the direction of the applied magnetic field. The study highlights the nontrivial defect physics in strongly spin-orbit coupled magnets in general, and Kitaev materials in particular.

Terahertz-induced second harmonic generation dynamics in antiferromagnetic Cr2O3

Vladislav Bilyk, Elena Mishina, Theo Rasing, and Alexey Kimel

Phys. Rev. B 110, 174449 (2024) - Published 26 November, 2024

Developing efficient means to control and detect stable spin states in antiferromagnets, which often do not have any net magnetization, has been a challenge since the very discovery of antiferromagnetism. Here, the authors report on experimental study of ultrafast Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) from antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 excited by an intense nearly single cycle terahertz (THz) pulse. The authors show that although SHG is an efficient mean to detect stable spin states in this compound and THz pulse is an efficient mean to control them, THz-induced SHG transients appear to have no relation to spin dynamics and can be explained in terms of THz electric field induced SHG.

Effect of low-temperature compression on superconductivity and crystal structure in strontium metal

J. Lim, S. Sinha, D. E. Jackson, R. S. Kumar, C. Park, R. J. Hemley, D. VanGennep, Y. K. Vohra, R. G. Hennig, P. J. Hirschfeld, G. R. Stewart, and J. J. Hamlin

Phys. Rev. B 110, 174519 (2024) - Published 25 November, 2024

The superconducting and structural properties of strontium metal are examined under pressures up to 60 GPa at cryogenic temperatures. Low-temperature pressure application doubles the superconducting critical temperature between 35–42 GPa compared to previous results with cryogenic cooling after room-temperature compression. Low-temperature x-ray diffraction shows that the Sr-IV phase remains stable up to 60 GPa, suggesting that thermal energy aids in overcoming kinetic barriers to the Sr-V phase, which appears above 46 GPa under room-temperature compression.
