Lone-pair-delayed persistent excitonic UV photochromism and charge transfer in Bi-doped and (Bi,Mg)-codoped stoichiometric lithium niobate single crystals

L. Kovács, G. Corradi, Zs. Szaller, L. Bencs, G. Mandula, and K. Lengyel

Phys. Rev. B 109, 214105 (2024) - Published 11 June, 2024

For a deeper understanding of the outstanding real-time photorefractive medium LiNbO3:(Bi,Mg) and excitonic processes in general, stoichiometric LiNbO3 (SLN) crystals are investigated using low-intensity near-ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and infrared-ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Absorption bands separated in SLN:Bi and SLN:(Bi,Mg) are assigned to specific Bi defect types and their persistent association with self-trapped excitons (pinned STEs, PSTEs) generated by near-UV irradiation. Processes on widely differing timescales are predicted for one- and two-photon excitations involving different excited states, relevant for further optimization of the system.

High-field/high-frequency electron spin resonances of Fe-doped βGa2O3 by terahertz generalized ellipsometry: Monoclinic symmetry effects

Steffen Richter, Sean Knight, Oscar Bulancea-Lindvall, Sai Mu, Philipp Kühne, Megan Stokey, Alexander Ruder, Viktor Rindert, Viktor Ivády, Igor A. Abrikosov, Chris G. Van de Walle, Mathias Schubert, and Vanya Darakchieva

Phys. Rev. B 109, 214106 (2024) - Published 13 June, 2024

High-spin systems with reduced crystal symmetry reveal strongly anisotropic magnetic resonance. Identification of defect-related species requires us to disentangle effects such as anisotropic Zeeman or zero-field splitting, which can be very challenging using traditional magnetic resonance. Here, the authors propose and demonstrate a new cavity-free method for measuring electron paramagnetic resonance at high magnetic fields using frequency-tunable terahertz ellipsometry. Spin Hamiltonian parameters are obtained for the iron defect in monoclinic Ga2O3, and compared with results from advanced theory calculations.

Signatures of fragmentation for periodically driven fermions

Somsubhra Ghosh, Indranil Paul, and K. Sengupta

Phys. Rev. B 109, 214304 (2024) - Published 12 June, 2024

The occurrence of prethermal Hilbert space fragmentation (HSF) in periodically driven quantum systems has its roots in the emergence of additional, approximate, kinetic constraints at special driving frequencies. Here, the authors show that the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) of a driven fermion chain with open boundary condition exhibit a signature of such HSF. At the special drive frequencies where such prethermal HSF occurs, the OTOCs display periodic unscrambling of information, which provides a yet unexplored, experimentally testable, marker for prethermal fragmentation.

Single-crystal growth and characterization of antiferromagnetically ordered EuIn2

Brinda Kuthanazhi, Simon X. M. Riberolles, Dominic H. Ryan, Philip J. Ryan, Jong-Woo Kim, Lin-Lin Wang, Robert J. McQueeney, Benjamin G. Ueland, and Paul C. Canfield

Phys. Rev. B 109, 214401 (2024) - Published 3 June, 2024

Using magnetization, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS), this study investigates the magnetic transitions and magnetic states in EuIn2, a novel topological semimetal candidate. The authors find three closely spaced transitions reflecting the effects of competing magnetic interactions within the triangular lattice of Eu atoms in this compound. Mössbauer spectroscopy and XRMS further suggest modulated magnetic ordering and an incommensurate propagation vector that persists down to 5 K.
