Zero-point renormalization of the band gap of semiconductors and insulators using the projector augmented wave method

Manuel Engel, Henrique Miranda, Laurent Chaput, Atsushi Togo, Carla Verdi, Martijn Marsman, and Georg Kresse

Phys. Rev. B 106, 094316 (2022) - Published 29 September, 2022

Electron-phonon physics has become an integral part of today’s materials science world. In this work, the authors present ab initio results for the zero-point renormalization of the band gap of various semiconductors and insulators. They use a new implementation of the VASP code that utilizes the sophisticated projector augmented wave method to calculate the electron-phonon perturbation. Two complementary ways of treating the all-electron information are discussed in this context.

Quantum spin liquid with emergent chiral order in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model

Bin-Bin Chen, Ziyu Chen, Shou-Shu Gong, D. N. Sheng, Wei Li, and Andreas Weichselbaum

Phys. Rev. B 106, 094420 (2022) - Published 16 September, 2022

Despite a plethora of numerical studies, the nature of the quantum spin liquid near the Mott transition in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model remains controversial. Using a careful DMRG analysis on long cylinders up to width 6, the authors identify here a gapped spin liquid with robust chiral long-range correlations. The analysis unveils the need for surprisingly long systems for the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking to occur due to strong open boundary effects. This reconciles previous contradictory results about this quantum spin liquid.

Thermodynamic insights into the intricate magnetic phase diagram of EuAl4

William R. Meier, James R. Torres, Raphael P. Hermann, Jiyong Zhao, Barbara Lavina, Brian C. Sales, and Andrew F. May

Phys. Rev. B 106, 094421 (2022) - Published 19 September, 2022

Topological spin textures like skyrmions and merons have been proposed to explain a topological Hall signal observed in magnetically ordered phases of EuAl4. Here, the authors investigate these phases via many complementary thermodynamic measurements of EuAl4 single crystals and discuss the symmetry implications of the results. The study provides a detailed magnetic phase diagram to guide future investigations, which includes three phase boundaries that were not previously identified.

Spin orbit torque driven magnetization reversal in CoFeTaB/Pt probed by resonant x-ray reflectivity

D. M. Burn, R. Fan, O. Inyang, M. Tokaç, L. Bouchenoire, A. T. Hindmarch, and P. Steadman

Phys. Rev. B 106, 094429 (2022) - Published 23 September, 2022

When electrical current flows through a heavy metal layer adjacent to a ferromagnetic layer, a spin-orbit torque is exerted on the magnetic spins within the ferromagnetic layer. This link between electronics and magnetic materials is significant for the development of novel technological memory and processing devices in a field known as spintronics. Here, the authors show how advanced synchrotron radiation techniques provide a new, nondestructive, and in situ view of the current-driven layer-dependent magnetization reversal in a spintronic bilayer system.

Probing laser-induced spin-current generation in synthetic ferrimagnets using spin waves

Phys. Rev. B 106, 094436 (2022) - Published 30 September, 2022

The role of nonlocal spin transport in technologically highly relevant all-optical magnetization switching (AOS) of rare-earth transition metal ferrimagnets is scarcely understood. The authors investigate spin-current generation in layered systems containing Gd and Tb by studying spin-waves that these spin currents excite in an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. They observe a large discrepancy in spin-current generation between Gd and Tb, which provides a possible explanation for the relative difficulty of achieving AOS in systems containing only Tb as the rare-earth material.
